Changeling

Film: Changeling
Director: Clint Eastwood
Starring: Angelina Joile, John Malkovich, Jeffery Donavan
Premieres: Cannes Film Fest [20 May 08], 31 Oct 08 [US]

On a Saturday morning in a working-class suburb, Christine said goodbye to her son, Walter, and left for work. When she came home, she discovered he had vanished. A fruitless search ensues, and months later, a boy claiming to be the nine-year-old is returned. Dazed by the swirl of cops, reporters and her conflicted emotions, Christine allows him to stay overnight. But in her heart, she knows he is not Walter. As she pushes authorities to keep looking, she learns that in Prohibition-era L.A., women don't challenge the system and live to tell their story. Slandered as delusional and unfit, Christine finds an ally in activist Reverend Briegleb, who helps her fight the city to look for her missing boy. Based on the actual incident that rocked California's legal system, Changeling tells the shocking tale of a mother's quest to find her son, and those who won't stop until they silence her.
.

"Based on a true story" films are interesting as they often bring audiences the extremes and unseen side of lives. Things so atrocious that no one would believe could have ever happened. Take last year's 'An American Crime' for example. This one by Clint Eastwood looks exquisite.

Blindness

Film: Blindness
Director: Fernando Meirelles
Starring: Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Alice Braga
Premieres: Cannes Film Fest [14 May 08], 23 Oct 08 [SG]

It begins in a flash, as one man is instantaneously struck blind while driving home from work, his whole world suddenly turned to an eerie, milky haze. One by one, each person he encounters – his wife, his doctor, even the seemingly good Samaritan who gives him a lift home – will in due course suffer the same unsettling fate. As the contagion spreads, and panic and paranoia set in across the city, newly blind victims of the “White Sickness” are rounded up and quarantined within a crumbling, abandoned mental asylum, where all semblance of ordinary life begins to break down.
.

If you have had enough of armageddon-notion films like the horrendously disappointing I Am Legend and The Happening, try watching just this one more. Blindness opened the Cannes Film Festival to mixed responses and has since been criticized by blind activists as offensive for portraying blind people as monsters. But i do have faith in Fernando Meirelles after experiencing his amazing City of God, and i believe this film would probably resemble Frank Darabont's The Mist, which proves to be more thought-provoking than horrifying. The end of days can't always be that meaningless.

He Doesn't Know Why

Artist: Fleet Foxes
Music: He Doesn't Know Why
Video: Music Video

My favorite indie band amongst the many others whom emerged this year. This five piece Seattle based group released their self-titled debut album in June through Sub-Pop, much to my delight as i've been searching for some new folk to get addicted to. The goats here are quite adorable. Makes me think of the Tennessee fainting goats.
